Yavapai County Proclaims September as National Preparedness Month

Published on September 08, 2025

YAVAPAI COUNTY, Arizona – The Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management (YCOEM) is proud to announce that the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors has officially proclaimed September 2025 as "National Preparedness Month" in Yavapai County. This proclamation emphasizes our commitment to raising awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and aligns with our vision of creating a more resilient community.

The past year has served as a powerful reminder of the importance of readiness. Events like the recent Woods Fire, alongside monsoon flooding and winter storms, highlight the fact that emergencies often occur without warning. These events underscore the need for preparedness to be a year-round commitment, not just a monthly focus.

National Preparedness Month is a great time to take small steps that make a big difference. This year's theme, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” focuses on getting back to the essentials. YCOEM will be sharing daily tips centered on four key actions every resident can take:

  • Know Your Risk: Know the different types of emergencies that could happen where you live and the appropriate responses to stay safe.
  • Make a Family Emergency Plan: Think about what you’ll need and how the people in your social circles can help each other. A plan helps you stay in control of your safety and the safety of those you care about.
  • Build an Emergency Supply Kit: Having enough food, water, and medicine can help you stay safe and comfortable until help arrives. A "go-bag" with essentials is critical for any evacuation situation.
  • Get Involved in Your Community: Keep up to date with your community’s emergency plan and work with neighbors to prepare. In a disaster, you may be the first one able to help.

When making your plans, be sure to consider the unique needs of everyone you care for, whether it be loved ones with medical conditions or disabilities, your pets, or neighbors who might need extra help getting prepared.

Residents are encouraged to follow YCOEM on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, LinkedIn, and NextDoor for daily posts expanding on each of these critical steps.

As a key event for National Preparedness Month, residents are invited to attend the Yavapai County Preparedness Expo, hosted by the Yavapai County COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster). The event will take place on Friday, September 19, from 8 am until 5 pm, at Cliff Castle Casino and will feature resources, information, and experts to help you and your family get prepared.

“Preparedness is a shared responsibility; it takes a whole community,” stated Ashley Ahlquist, Emergency Manager. “We encourage all residents of Yavapai County to take this opportunity to review and update their emergency plans and supplies. By staying informed and prepared, we can create a more resilient and ready community.”
