Flood Protection
Flood Protection
Retrofitting – This includes strategies like raising buildings above flood levels, dry and wet flood proofing, and safeguarding against sewer backups. These measures can help ensure that a building experiences little to no damage during a flood. Resources and guidance are available at the District office. FEMA’s Flood Protection library is below. Yavapai County Flood Control would be happy to assist you with how to implement these retrofitting techniques and what permits may be need.
Permanent retrofitting for flooding:
- Elevate utilities.
- Install flood openings.
- Fill in the basement.
- Elevate your property.
- Relocate your home out of the risk area.
- Hire a civil engineer to assist with the drainage around the home.

Maintain your Drainage Systems
Homeowners are responsible for the upkeep of driveway culverts and rain gutters. It's essential to regularly remove debris to ensure that water can flow unobstructed. This practice helps prevent flooding, pipe blockages, damage to adjacent properties, as well as pest and mold infestations.
Landscaping and grading can impact drainage. It's important that water continues to flow in and out of your property as it has historically. There are several techniques you can implement to enhance drainage while ensuring no harm comes to your neighbor's property. Check out our Guide to Drainage Around Your Home.
